James Christopher Opot Center for Children
Hundro Village, Kenya
Our Objective
Based on the facts listed in the previous section, there is a serious need and we have to take action as soon as possible. Children are dying as a result of problems that have simple solutions, this is unacceptable and it must stop.
These impoverished children need love and a chance to better their circumstances. With no one to care for them they will never be educated, thus continuing the cycle of poverty. Given the love and support they need they could grow up to change the face of Kenya.
Children's Center Objectives
Creating a center that strives to be environmentally sound by:
» Using solar power
» Composting materials to use in creating organic soil
» Striving to use only bio-degradable products
» Creating a trash program that:
- Doesn’t harm the environment
- Can be used as a model for similar communities
- Recycles products within the center
Creating a true “home” for these kids by:
» Giving love and positive encouragement
» Showing them their potential and their options
» Create a family atmosphere, both staff and children supporting and
loving one another
» Providing a safe environment
Each child will receive a complete education by:
» Providing a stimulating daycare program for the pre-primary children that
live there and others in need in the community.
» Providing uniforms, books, and supplies to Primary students (Primary
school is free)
» Covering all Secondary school fees, including books, uniforms, and supplies
» A scholarship fund will strive to assist those who qualify for a University
Education
» Assistance for local community colleges and technical schools will be
available for students that choose it.
» Each night there will be a scheduled time that the children sit down to do
their homework together, the staff will observe, assist, and tutor
Each child will know that they have options and we will encourage their dreams and help them to come true.
Create after school and weekend activities to give them something positive to do with their time.
» Encouraging the arts, sports, and life skills programs
We take complete responsibility for “our children’s” health
» Each child will receive monthly checkups by a pediatrician
» We will provide all required medication and treatment for each child
» Children that are infected with HIV/AIDS will receive all necessary
treatment and support
» Since many of the children have been severely traumatized we will
encourage positive emotional and mental health by:
Having a full-time counselor on staff that is trained to work with traumatized
children and help them heal and move forward
Always surround them with genuine love and support.
The orphanage will house 25-30 children ages 4-18.
Sarah Fennel spent the month of September in this area of Kenya to obtain a real assessment of the situation. The need in the immediate area where the orphanage will be is immense. As a result of the AIDS epidemic, it is not uncommon for a grandmother to be the sole provider for 10 grandchildren. For an elderly woman that is already impoverished this is close to impossible. However, the strength of these women allows their families to survive.
Restore Humanity wants to help lighten the load. The children in this area that have no one to look after them or are in a neglectful or dangerous situation will come to live in the orphanage and that will become their home. Restore Humanity also wants to create an outreach program for the children that have a home to live in, but need assistance with food, school and medical fees, etc. If it is a safe and loving environment, the best place for a child to be is with their family and through this program Restore Humanity will provide support for these local families.
Outreach Program
For the children in the outreach program we will:
Provide assistance with school fees, uniforms, books, and supplies for
children in the outreach program that need it.
Provide meals at the center
Provide medical assistance and counseling
Create after school and weekend activities to give them positive things to
do with their time.
» Encourage the arts, sports, and life skills programs
Allow any and all of them to join our children in the home during homework
sessions to:
» Get support from their peers about education
» Receive tutoring from the staff, since many of their guardians at home
are illiterate
» Create a positive environment to encourage organization and continuing
education
Provide training to the children’s guardians to help them better deal with the
children, especially with those that are traumatized.
Strive to make the center a place where all children feel welcome and safe.
Even if the children are not living in the home, they feel it is a place to turn
in their time of need.
We will strive to include the community as much as possible in our programs
because being a part of a unified community is so essential to each person
in it, especially the children.
